DAA slams delay in charge decision
Irish Independent Friday April 27th 2007

THE Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) has strongly criticised the aviation
regulator's decision to delay an upcoming announcement on airport charges.

Aviation regulator Cathal Guiomard was expected to make a draft determination on the charges by the end of the month. However, yesterday he issued a statement saying that he had "decided to take a short amount of additional time".

The statement added that a further announcement would be made "once the
[new] timetable has been clarified".

The move is a blow to the DAA, which had asked for the charges review to help finance the airport's €1.8bn development plan.

"The DAA urgently needs clarity about the level of airport charges available to finance the investment programme and is very conscious of any delay in obtaining that clarity," a spokesman said last night.

The aviation regulator's move comes just weeks after Transport Minister
Martin Cullen issued a directive to the regulator requiring him to prioritise the DAA's needs.

A spokesman for Mr Cullen said it would not be appropriate for the minister to comment on the latest development.

A draft determination on charges is now expected in about two weeks time, once additional information has been gathered from several parties.

Once that has been published, the Commission for Aviation Regulation will pursue further consultation with airlines, before a final decision is made in the summer.

Any move to increase airport charges is expected to be heavily contested by Ryanair, who have been staunch critics of the DAA's plans.
