MEMBERS of the campaign group, United Portmarnock Residents Opposing Another Runway (UPROAR), spoke to hundreds of shoppers outside Dunnes Stores, Portmarnock, last week about the proposal for a northern parallel runway at Dublin Airport.

The group claimed that if the proposal goes ahead, it will be a "disaster" for Portmarnock and other communities.UPROAR claimed they found overwhelming support for their campaign.

Matt Harley, a spokesman for the group, said that hundreds of shoppers pledged their ongoing support. It was striking how many visitors from Malahide and Swords had not realised the impact the proposed runway would have on their lives," said Mr Harley.
"With the new flightpath more than a mile further north of the existing east-west flightpath, Malahide and south Swords will be within a new 'Airport Noise Zone' that will bring more aircraft noise and air pollution to some 40,000 to 50,000 people."
Mr Harley also warned that the proposed runway will be a decisive issue at the next general election in the Dublin North constituency.

UPROAR's display at Dunnes Stores included a proiect by students from Santa Sabina School, Sutton, which received a special award at the recent BT Young Scientists Exhibition where it was highly commended.
The students studied the environmental impact of existing flight paths serving Dublin Airport.
